Reputation VS Course Content

Hi..
I have applied for Masters in Germany
I have an admit from TU kaiserslautern as well as FH Kiel...
I am in a fix now..

My main concern is about the course content...

The course content is wonderful and has the modules which I want in Fh Kiel.
But the same cant be said about TU Kaiserslautern....

And I am definitely not interested in any kind of PHD's what so ever.
So which one should I choose ??

Should I go for a lesser known FH which has the course I want or should I take up Kaiserslautern.

And TU Kaiserslautern is far more renowed than Fh Kiel.
So it all boils down to this

Should I follow my heart and go for the Fh which has a good course content to my liking or should I go for Reputed Universities like TU Kaiserslautern whose course content I just don't like.

Course Content VS Reputation...

If you could shed some light on this I'd be grateful.

Thank you so much for your time.
This is my first time in Edulix and I am sorry if I didn't follow any rules.

Hoping for a reply,
Have a great day

If you are not interested in a PhD and if you like the course curriculum at FH Kiel, then you must definitely take up the course at Kiel rather than joining TU Kaiserlautern.

All universities are good in germany, so joining FH Kiel will not reduce your employement opportunities nor will a degree from TU Kaiserlautern increase your chances.

Get good grades and speak good German and you will find a job.

Not active on Edulix anymore! Please tag other seniors for guidance.

All the best!

You have your answer. It doesnt make any sense to try for a program which you do not like at all! You would not be interested in the lectures, and in turn, will lose out on so much more than grades.

Trick Question.

Many of the times Reputation comes to the rescue of graduate aspirants during Visa Interview and very often Course Content saves the day when you answer "Why XYZ University".

From my personal experience, NJIT is one of the dreadful university i have noticed in lot of members' posts/research including Edulix. I was strongly advised to not go ahead with it 6 years ago. (OFC, i had no better choiceEmbarassed. Upon my research and proff.letting i learnt that it has few exceptionally well renowned professors(http://web.njit.edu/~nassimi/, http://cs.njit.edu/~geller/, http://web.njit.edu/~dth/ , http://web.njit.edu/~mili/courses.htm, the list goes on) which will allow me to complete my MS with Database Management as a specialization which was always my area of interest. Upon my competition, i landed as a DBA.

So, my vote goes in for "Course Content".

Live Life The Maharaja size !
Cheers.

I Guess you are right to a certain extent....
Germany is way different to USA..
The visa scene for US is well lets say very stringent ..

That is not the case for Germany ...
Yesterday I had my visa interview for a German visa in Mumbai ..
Well I can hardly call that an interview .. More like document verification ..
So I don't think German applicants should be more inclined towards Reputation ..

Even my vote goes to Course Content ..
I had a friend of mine with an admit from NJIT . He was rejected thrice . Lost all confidence and now works in a lowly paid job . Sulks everytime you mention USA.
Sadly he was a genuine student and wanted to really come back to India after studies.
and its not that those who don't come back are not genuine students ..
Just used it in respect to this context ..

Cheers

Regarding Visa Interview:

There are various reasons for not having a visa interview for students going to universities in Schengen countries.
1. In order to get student visa for europe, you need to deposit money (Both tuition and living expense) into an University account. That takes care of fraudulent bank statements.
2. Students entering a Schengen country are initially given a category-D visa which is just an entry visa. Once you reach the univ, you need to submit your passport for permanent residence. Also the visa is valid only for your time of study. (For masters 2 years. In some countries it is given for an yr and need to renew it again after one year). After completion of studies, you are allowed to stay for 6 months as a job seeker in country. This is unlike the US visa system where some students get F1-visa for 5 yrs (for a 2 year MS course)
3. Barring a few countries, most countries in Europe look for international talent. For example, Germany is predicted to have a severe shortage of Engineers in near future. Similarly, Scandinavian countries have vast land area but very less population. Also the number of universities offering all/most branches of engineering is very less in Europe (barring Germany and England). Hence there are less engineers locally. So it is also their necessity to have work force from outside to meet their local demands. This could be one of the main reasons for the embassies not asking about your return immediately after graduation.

Tag me only for European universities...

Oh far from it! They want you to NOT go back but work here for some time, since it will be brain gain for them in times of sever Engineering talent shortages. Now the added incentives in Germany is 1 year extra for job search and PR status in 2 years after getting a job(!). They've also lowered the minimum wage required to get a residency permit, making foreign talent more attractive to companies here.

One of my professors here is the ex Mayor of Aachen city and he repeatedly says that since we study here for free, we owe it to Germany to work for a good few years here and then go back to our country if we want. But he expressly forbids us (lol) to go back immediately.

Far, far, far cry from the situation in UK and US.

I seriously doubt the veracity of this statement. AFAIK, the day your course finishes or your not enrolled in a course with the college in the US your expected to leave. Also in the case of Germany, students are allowed to extend their visa for upto a year to find employment if they have performed their studies in Germany.
