To GRE or NOT!
Hey guys ,
I am planning to do my Masters in Germany and
looking into the following options.
MSc Computer Sience Saarland Univ
Informatics @ TUM (very intersted in this one)
Media Informatics @ RWTH AAchen
My profile goes like
10th A+
12th 90%
CGPA 8.5 (Till 6th semester)
No Internships etc yet..But can do it in
December(if necessary)...
I can take up the TOEFL/ IELTES but GRE prep
will eat up a lot of time , which I can spend on
German language preparation and final year
works...
My question is should I take up the GRE?

Santi AFAIK, GRE is not mandatory for TUM, but its always an added advantage if your scores are good. But TUM usually gives more importance to GATE scores of Indian students upon GRE. So, i suggest u to write GATE as well. Its upto u to decide whether to write any one or both. Smile

thank you for the response! I heard that TUM regard the Gate scores highly, but is nt that for the computation science course? I did not see a word about Gate in the tum Informatics website.
what are the average scores, any idea?
I also heard that German universities look into only the quants section in GRE. is it true?

Good that you have done some homework before asking questions..as far as GATE scores for TUM informatics is concerned, it didn't help me at all..I got a reject Sad. However, GATE scores were valued in MSCE and Computation science admissions this year.

My question is should I take up the GRE?

I am not from your branch. So this is a general reply.
It is good that you are clear about the universities you want to apply.
However, it is advisable to give GRE test since it may come in handy later. Initially many students only have 2-3 universities in mind (mostly the ambitious ones) but gradually they tend to increase the list of universities (to include the moderate and safe ones). You dont really want to end up in a situation later where you want to apply to a university but cannot due to lack of GRE score.

GRE preparation is not very time consuming if you plan your preparation properly. You will have atleast 4 months to prepare if you intend to write your GRE in December/January. Spend one hour every day on GRE preparation on weekdays and 2 hours on holidays. That should be more than sufficient to get a very good score.

Internships are always an added advantage. European Universities give a lot of importance to Grades. But nowadays the competition in European universities is increasing. Hence there is a high probability for top universities to receive application from candidates with almost the same GPA. It is at this point that the internships/paper presentations/projects come in very handy and can tilt the decision in your favor.

Tag me only for European universities...

krazzycool Thanks for the response.
So I will give it (GRE) a shot , I think I can manage some really decent scores in the Quants. Let us see how it turns out.Do you have any idea of an average score for univs like RWTH?
billa

But taking up GRE might mean no internships at least for now.
That would leave me the option of applying for the Fall Admissions , 6 months following the end of my Undergrad course.
(In case I don't get admit in the Winter Admissions of course).

Regards

Santi Sorry, I have no idea about GRE average score for RWTH.

I guess sometimes the past just catches up with you, whether you want it to or not.

My friends have got into RWTH with scores of 1090 also.. Imp is given to your acads mainly..GRE will help you to give your app an additional boost. I would recommend you to score 315+ to be on safe side for all the univ..

Vinay
