Yes, some of the top univs in UK are comparable with the good ones in US, this is actually a very generalised question..... comparable in what sense, you mean jobs, phd prospect, good teaching, good research..... what are the parameters you looking for .... certain univs like cambridge, oxford, imperial , warwick are good in most fields

use this url of Guardian which like USNews does ranking of Uk univs to get your subject ranking.

it is a very ineteractive guide and is free. Do consult this before making your decisions for colleges in U.K.

http://education.guardian.co.uk/universi...46,00.html

about the application , you don't need GRE in most courses, toefl/ielts is needed and your acads are of most importance.

Yes, in UK you are given a grant of funds for 3 years and need to finish it in 3 years time as well.

Most of my friends in final year of phds ( ranging from quantum physics to roman history ) are almost near completion after 3 years. you donot strictly finish it in 3 years time and can keep on and on but i have seen people wrap things up in 3 1/2 years to max 4 years.

Some are on a 5 year schedule as well but this is very rare. they can do this as they don't need to take lectures for initial 2 years as i guess is common in US and basically have the supervisor breathing down upon you so it is really funny to see even the phds here don't have much time and putting in 14 hours of work everyday.

cheers

I am doing my masters in CS....

I am sure you can do a phd in 3 years unless it is time bound such as one female i know is researching how her new algorithm is going to help in better humidity data collection or something like that and she has to test her algorithm over the three seasons, now she took 2 years to make this program and now since she would need atleast 3 sets of data, she needs to be here for 5 years. but cases like this are rare, i met so many people but she is the only one who knows she swould take 5 years.... most of the phd guys take probably a couple of months over the 3rd year to write things down. If your supervisor would be working along with you everyday, you have access to him most of the time and he presses you to work like a mule, i am sure you would be able to finish it in 3 years..... but the bottom line is they suck the happiness out of your life. I would also think that getting a project over in 3 years and getting a new one would also renew the profs individual funding scenario though i don't know how much this would rank in their list of priority.

thats bad but i understand what you trying to say. britons want to move on faster in search of industry funding which is sizeable in comparison to government funding whereas the case is different in america

Is it comparable to MIS from US universities?
If you know anyone pursuing the course there kindly forward me to them, I'd be greatful.
